    Description

This one of a kind ring hails from Spain (Barcelona) where my seller found it about 10 years ago. It was sold to her as sapphires, but it tests as iolite with 2 glass replacement stones. Everything about this ring is old and very cool. The gem cuts. The construction. The design. I would date it in the 1830s, with a new shank added in the last 75 years. Its either a late Georgian piece or very early Victorian. It has the feel of something an empress would wear.
The face of the ring measures 18.4mm in diameter and it stands 9mm off the hand. The face has flush set blue round gems, 5 of which appear to be iolite and 2 appear to be glass. All of the gems, whether they be glass or natural stones, are very old cuts with small tables and off round, somewhat wonky shapes. You can see some variation in color as well with a few of the stones much more purple blue and others a brighter, more royal blue. They range in diameter from about 3.5mm to 4mm.
Interspersed with the blue gems are 21 small silvery colored natural seed pearls. They range in size from about 1.3mm to 1.7mm in diameter, There is a larger seed pearl right in the center of the ring which measures about 3.5mm in diameter. Some of the pearls have some wear/cracks in the luster but overall the piece looks great on the hand. Very regal!
The ring is uniquely constructed with a crown-like undermount that is raised off the finger over a polished gold panel. There are four prongs which seem to hold the oldest part of the ring to the newer shank and undermount. I am sure someone wanted to preserve this wonderful ring and had the shank construction made in the last 75 years or so. The shank measures 1.9mm at the back.
This piece is unmarked for gold content but the top tests as 12K and the shank section is between 12 and 14K. Currently a size 5.25 it will fit a 5.5 due to the open back design (I wear a 5.5 and its very comfortable.) This beauty can be sized by your jeweler. This incredible piece of history weighs 6.76 grams.
